What to Wear in Essex, CT This Spring: A Real-Woman's Guide to Dressing for the Shoreline
Spring in Essex doesn't announce itself the way it does in other places. It arrives quietly β a warm afternoon that catches you off guard, light on the river that looks different than it did last week, the first morning you step outside and feel it. And then you look down at what you're wearing and realize you're three weeks behind.
I've lived and worked on Main Street long enough to know that dressing for spring here requires a specific kind of thinking. The temperature swings are real β 42 degrees at school drop-off, 65 by noon, and back to chilly once the sun drops behind the tree line. You might walk to Savour Cafe in the morning, spend an afternoon at the river, and end up at Noah's for dinner, all in the same outfit. That outfit needs to work hard.
This is what I've been reaching for this season. Every piece is in the shop right now β come find us at 23 Main Street, or shop online anytime.
The Layering Pieces That Carry You Through
The single most important thing you can do for your spring wardrobe in New England is solve the layering problem. Not with a heavy coat you'll be too warm in by 11am. Something you actually want to wear β something that looks intentional rather than practical.

Sketchbook Sailboat Varsity Cardigan
This one went up on the rack and immediately started conversations. The hand-drawn sailboat print reads like something out of a sketchbook β specific, charming, and the kind of thing that feels like you rather than something you just picked up. The varsity silhouette gives it structure. It layers beautifully over a slip dress or the ruffle hem shirt dress, and it's warm enough for an Essex morning without being too much by afternoon.

Marina Colorblock Cardigan
If the sailboat cardigan is the playful choice, the Marina is the one for when you want to look like you tried without trying. The colorblock is graphic enough to be the focal point of an outfit β pair it with white trousers, the barrel jeans, or a simple slip and it does all the work. The kind of layer you reach for on a Tuesday that makes the whole day feel a little more intentional.

Sweater-Knit Crochet Round Neck Top β Jaded Green
The color alone. Jaded green is one of those spring shades that reads as a neutral on the right person and a statement on everyone else β which is exactly why it works. The crochet texture gives it dimension without weight, and the sweater-knit construction means it has a little more structure than you'd expect. This is the top that makes a pair of white jeans feel finished.

There's a particular kind of spring dress that works for life on the Connecticut shoreline β one that can handle the walk from your car to Main Street, lunch on a patio, and an afternoon by the river without feeling like you changed categories somewhere in the middle of the day. These are the ones I keep returning to.

Blue & White Stripe Ruffle Hem Shirt Dress
This collaboration between Sail to Sable and Connecticut artist Julia McGuire is one of those pieces I'd have bought for myself if I weren't the one ordering it for the shop. The blue and white stripe is as close to Essex in summer as a piece of clothing can get β it belongs on a dock, on Main Street, at a birthday lunch, all of it. The ruffle hem gives it movement. The shirt dress silhouette keeps it grounded. Throw the sailboat cardigan over it on a cool morning and you're exactly where you want to be.

Maren Seashell Print UPF Shirt Dress
Nikki Amabile started Ivy Coast because she wanted to make coastal clothing that could actually keep up with a day on the water β and the Maren is the proof of that. The seashell print is bold in the best way: specific, coastal, and the kind of pattern that grows on you the more you wear it. The UPF fabric means real sun protection without sacrificing how it looks or moves. This is the dress you pack first.

Not every spring day calls for a dress. These are the pieces that build out the rest of your week.

Cotton Lace Group Top
The lace detail on this top is understated enough to work in any context β it doesn't announce itself, it just elevates whatever you put it with. Pair it with the barrel jeans for a weekend in town or tuck it into white trousers for dinner. Cotton means it breathes. The fit is the kind of relaxed-but-shaped that makes you look like you know exactly what you're doing.

Scalloped Button-Down Top
This is the top that goes with everything and still feels like a choice. The scalloped edge keeps it from reading as basic; the button-down construction makes it endlessly versatile β open over a tank, tucked into the barrel jeans, thrown over a swimsuit after a morning at the marina. One of those pieces that earns its place in your wardrobe every single week.

Flora Mid-Rise Barrel Jeans β Heart Embroidery
Barrel jeans were the silhouette of last year and they're going nowhere β because the fit is genuinely flattering and the relaxed leg means you're comfortable all day. The heart embroidery on the Flora elevates these past the basics without going over the top. They're the jeans you'll reach for on the days when you want to feel like yourself. Pair them with the crochet top and the rattan crossbody and you have a full spring Saturday in Essex, sorted.

The right accessories in spring aren't about dressing up β they're about finishing the picture. These are the ones worth reaching for.

One more: the Golden Petals No. 09 Hoops by Carson & Co.
These don't need much explanation. Gold hoops with a petal detail that catches the light β the kind of earring that goes with everything in this post and makes the whole outfit feel finished. Shop them here.
While You're in Essex: Where to Go After You Shop
If you're making the trip to New England's #1 small town this spring, here's exactly how I'd spend the day. This is a walk I've taken more times than I can count β and it never gets old.
Start Your Morning Right
Begin here. The scones are the best reason to arrive early, the drip coffee from Joe's is dark and exactly right, and the owner Kim has the warmest room in town. The macarons are a non-negotiable if you have children with you β or if you are a child at heart.
A family-run gem in a converted gas station right downtown. The Applewood Smoked Bacon breakfast sandwich with a cappuccino is our gold standard for a spring morning.
Spend Your Afternoon on Main Street
This is your first stop. Everything in this post is here, along with the rest of our spring arrivals for women, baby, and kids. We're open 10-5, seven days a week. Come in, take your time, and if you need a gift wrapped β just ask at checkout and we'll take care of it.
One of those stores that feels like it was put together by someone with very good taste and no interest in being trendy. The home goods selection is the kind you linger over β thoughtful, specific, and giftable in the best way. Worth the stop every single time.
Walk down to the foot of Main Street and spend a few minutes at the river β you're already at the Griswold Inn end, which means you're steps from the water. In spring, the boats are going back in, the Eagle Cruises are running out of the CT River Museum, and the ducks are out in full force with kids lined up at the docks and Sweet P's Ice Cream close behind. Then work your way back up Main Street β the whole stretch is less than half a mile and every storefront is worth a look.
Lunch or Dinner
Our personal go-to. The cocktail program is exceptional, the bar overlooks the river, and the menu has never once let us down. If the weather holds, ask about the deck.
The deck overlooks the boatyard and river β the kind of view that makes whatever you ordered taste better. If the Shrimp & Grits are on the menu, order them immediately. But we hear the lobster rolls will be back soon - equally as amazing.
Tacos, margaritas, and the best dining room energy in Centerbrook. The brussels sprout tacos have their own following. The margarita special is not optional.
