When the chill of winter has set in and the days feel especially gray, the charming town of Essex, CT, comes alive with one of its most beloved traditions: the Groundhog Day Parade. If you're looking for a whimsical and heartwarming way to embrace winter with your family, this event is a must-see.
The History of Essex Ed
The Groundhog Day Parade began in 1978, thanks to the creative spark of resident Mary Ellen Brophy. During an especially cold winter, Mary Ellen and her friends decided to bring some joy to the season by introducing Essex Ed—a twelve-foot papier-mâché groundhog. Dubbed “creative vandalism,” Essex Ed made his first surprise appearance without official approval, delighting locals and earning his spot as a town celebrity.
Forty-six years later, the tradition continues stronger than ever. Each year, Essex Ed emerges from Essex Boat Works donning a top-secret costume designed by a local community organization. His outfit—always unveiled on the day of the parade—honors a special person or event.
What to Expect at the Parade
- When: Sunday, February 2
- Where: Essex Ed begins his journey at Essex Boat Works and parades up Main Street to the roundabout.
- Why Attend: From the costumes to the noisemakers, this event is all about community and fun. Parade-goers celebrate with groundhog hats, banging pots, lids, and spoons, and even playing trumpets, making it an unforgettable, joyful scene.
- Popcorn & Hot Chocolate: The Griswold Inn continues its long-standing tradition of serving snacks to keep everyone warm and cheerful.
